John von Neumann

Definition

John von Neumann rate
(Noun) ("NOYman"; 1903-1957). The greatest mathematician never to win a Nobel Prize - for at least three reasons: (1) He was a polymath, not just a mathematician - so it wouldn't have been blindingly obvious what to award it in; (2) He died so young that the no one had time to figure out what to award it in; (3) "Mathematics" would have been the obvious choice, but there is no Nobel Prize in mathematics.
Usage: John von Neumann, lecture at the Institute for Advanced Study: "The goys have proved this theorem ... ."
